Mário Centeno

Mário Centeno is the Governor of Banco de Portugal and member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank since 20 July 2020. He was Finance Minister from 2015 to 2020 and served as President of the Eurogroup from 2018 to 2020. In that capacity, he was also appointed President-Elect of the Board of Governors of the European Stability Mechanism. Previously, has held several positions in Banco de Portugal, where he started his career in 1993. He received a PhD in Economics from Harvard University in 2000. He holds a Master’s in Applied Mathematics and a degree in Economics from ISEG. He is a Professor at the University of Lisbon and the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. As part of his academic activity, he is the author of publications in several national and international scientific journals.
