Jacobo Varela

With two master’s degrees in business administration (from UAM) and Law (from UNED), Jacobo’s career as banking supervisor started in 2001 in Bank of Spain, after a short internship in the Market Operations department. Until 2006, he would be part of the policy area, involved in the development of accounting and financial reporting standards for Spanish credit institutions. For the next two years, his career would be transferred to London, in the Committee of European Banking Supervisors, predecessor of existing European Banking Authority. Returning in 2008 to Bank of Spain supervision department as an expert in accounting topics, his professional path moved him again to EU institutions in 2013, in this case to the European Central Bank, which at that time was implementing the new Single Supervisory Mechanism that took over in November 2014 the direct supervision of largest banks in the euroarea. Since then, he has been JST Coordinator of different significant institutions located in Italy, Germany and France. Currently, he is Head of Section in the Institutional and Sectoral Oversight, in charge of the oversight of the supervisory system of the Less Significant Institutions in several countries of the SSM. He is very interested in modern European history.
