The agri-food sector in Portugal – current situation and perspectives (in English)

Former Minister of Agriculture
Arlindo Cunha holds a degree in economics from the University of Porto (1975), and a MPhil and a PhD from the University of Reading. He worked as an economist and director at the Northern Portugal Regional Development Board (1976-86), and spent most of his life implementing the CAP and negotiating its reforms: was Minister of State at the Ministry of Agriculture (1986-90), Minister for Agriculture (1990-94) and Member of the European Parliament -MEP (1994-2003). In 2003-2004 he was President of Northern Portugal Regional Development Board, Minister of Environment, Cities, Regional Development and Land Planning (2004) and Chairman of Porto Vivo – Public Society for the Urban Renewal of Porto (2004-2010).  While  Minister he chaired the Agriculture Council that negotiated and approved the 1992 CAP Reform; and while MEP, he was the Parliament´s Rapporteur for the 1999 and 2003 CAP Reforms, as well as the Rapporteur for the Agricultural Negotiations of the Doha Round of the WTO. He is presently Professor of European Economy at the Portuguese Catholic University-Porto, President of the Dão Wine Regulatory Committee  and a wine grower at the Dão Region. He is also a member of the European Association of Agricultural Economists, the Portuguese Agricultural Economists Association and member of the Editorial Board of the Spanish Revue of Agricultural Economics and Natural Resources.
